Why I Love Being A #GIRLBOSS

Monday 21 March 2016

You know when you reach your twenties and you start question the kind of person you want to be, whilst having all those society expectations weighing on you? I think I have finally found my way through that horrible transition stage that we all must go through and have emerged as, you guessed it, a total #GIRLBOSS. This is all just my personal opinion, and if you don't agree with the notion of it then I respect that fully.

To me, a #GIRLBOSS is someone who is fiercely independent, secure with who she is, and works hard to achieve the life she knows she is capable of living. It's something that I find very empowering and on days where I need a bit of motivation it never fails to get me back on track. It's a role that I've settled into as I'm discovering my career path, although I know I've had it in me all along. Get ready for a whole lot of sass, because I'm releasing my inner diva for you!

Here's why I love being a #GIRLBOSS:

I don't settle
I will just say it: I am not okay with being mediocre or average. I have far too much fire in me to not strive to be as awesome as possible. I had to take the easy road when it came to employment and learned quickly that it wasn't for me. It is scary when you decide to take a risk in your career, but I feel like that's where all of those amazing moments happen that make life fun. I don't want to look back on my life and realize that I spent it helping someone else reach their dreams instead of working on my own. Always strive for the best. There's no fun in doing what society tells you to do.

I don't believe in limits
The more I got into my fitness, the more I kept overcoming challenges and realizing that there wasn't anything I couldn't do after a bit of hard work and dedication. The same goes for what I want to achieve in my career. I always endeavor to make big plans and be the person that doesn't give up when everyone else does. Society may be telling me that at 24 I should be in a steady 9-5 job and probably getting married, but not just yet thanks! I'm definitely more of the free-spirit, travel the world, and take a risk kind of girl.

No time for negativity
This is something I have learned through working alongside different types of people. There are people who find solutions, and there are people who find problems for every solution. They seem to like suffering and being able to complain about it. Energy is contagious and it makes a difference in your own behavior. Life is way too short to live like that and for someone who considers social media part of my job, I'm gonna spread as much positivity as I can. There are no negative-Nelly's allowed in my life.

I ain't afraid to stand alone
I've never been that girl who needs a tonne of friends around her, or a boy by her side. I was raised to be self-motivating and it's helped me learn how to be dependent solely on myself. Also picking a career that doesn't fit the norms means you have to have your own back and be able to stand strong when people doubt you. You have to stand up and say "I don't care if you don't like it, I'm gonna do it anyway." There's power in that and I really love the way it feels.

A girl can be both pretty and smart
I read a really empowering post by heythererobyn and it reminded me of another reason why being a #GIRLBOSS can be a very powerful thing. Robyn brought up a misconception that just because a girl enjoys makeup and fashion, she can't possibly be intelligent. Especially if she blogs about. Excuse me society, but let me remind you that to blog you have to be a writer, photographer, social media manager, editor and a designer. We are all intelligent women (and men) who create content to help others, and we look damn good doing it too.

The world is changing
Technology and social media have had such an impact on the career market and it's something I find to be really exciting. I've watched so many people build themselves on their passion for creating content and working hard to get there. They're my biggest inspirations and I always say, "If they can do it, why can't I?" I really want to be a part of this new generation of social media careers and see where it takes us in the future. Business women are changing and we are building our own empires, baby!

I love standing out
This may seem weird coming from someone who considers themselves quite introverted, but one of my biggest motivations is my fear of being average. I never EVER want someone to describe me with the word "basic"  or "boring." I'm that girl who wears red lipstick and a tight pencil skirt just because it's Saturday. At the same time I will ride the biggest roller coaster with you and get a spontaneous tattoo on holiday. I don't need attention, I just can't be like everyone else. A #GIRLBOSS is comfortable with themselves and aren't afraid to show the world how awesome they can be.

Too much sass for one post? Maybe, but that felt good to get off my chest!
#GIRLBOSS sums me up pretty well and has made me gain a lot of respect for other women who are out there making their dreams happen. It's also helped me grow comfortable in my own skin and shamelessly be able to say that I love myself.

What do you think of the whole #GIRLBOSS movement?
Let me know : )

  1. Personally I'm not that all caught up with the girlboss movement, however just from reading your post I think it's a great thing. I think it's great to use whatever inspiration you get from anywhere to make yourself a better you. We should always go after what we want especially if we are willing to work hard for it. It's easy to get down on some days when you have trouble "adulting" but I'm learning to move past that and focus on the things I want to do and also embrace who I am, faults, insecurities and all. It's time to stop saying sorry and just do things...everything! :) I think I made sense there! :p

  3. I love GirlBoss movement right now and I think you are surely one of the best examples. I'd like to think that I'm starting to become one too but there are still few things I'm not comfortable with. But I'm trying to move past that and enjoy my life 100% with the best GirlBoss attitude :)
