Why You Should Ditch Your Comfort Zone Right Now

Sunday, 6 November 2016

You know when you were younger and adults were always telling you to push yourself and to get out of your comfort zone? Yeah, I completely understand why they tried to instill that in us now. This one's gonna get deep yall, so buckle yourselves in and let's do this!

As I'm making my way through my 20s, I'm continuing to learn about how life works and how I want to be as a person. I've changed quite a bit these past few years, but recently I've been trying a new approach to living that is opening my eyes to how I can get the things I want. All I'm simply doing is stepping out of my comfort zone and seeing what is beyond it. And you know what? I feel fantastic.

"When it feels scary to jump, that's exactly when you jump. Otherwise you end up staying in the same place your whole life. And that I can't do." -Unknown

One thing that I have learned about life is that you should never settle for anything less than great. I'm someone who finds joy in the little things: a great cup of coffee, a new journal, reading a book. I like to find magic in anything I can. Sometimes the only way to find great things that make you happy is to leave that comfort zone and try something new. You just never know what it could lead to or how much fun you might have. It's scary, but nothing will change if you don't take that step.

Let me tell you a story of something that happened recently: I had a crush on someone for a while and thought that through all the teasing and flirting, he felt the same. After months of this I just needed to know the truth, for my own peace and being able to move forward. Asking him how he felt was probably one of the scariest things I have ever done in my life. I honestly think getting into one of those cages and watching sharks swim by wouldn't have even topped it. And even though I didn't get the answer I had hoped for, I was so damn proud of myself for being bold and simply asking him. It was a time to be brave and do something for myself and it make me feel 100 times more confident in my ability to face tough situations. It was a giant leap out of my comfort zone, but it was just what I needed to bring myself some peace.

"When you get that feeling to go for it, don't hesitate. The worst thing that could happen is that you run out of time to do what your heart begged you to do." - The Better Man Project

Sometimes taking a chance and doing something bold works out great, sometimes it doesn't. But no matter what the outcome is, you've grown as a person and can walk about being proud of yourself. That there is growth and it's living life to your full potential. It's scary to leave your comfort zone, but when your gut is telling you to make a move, you should listen.

Another thing that happened recently was that I joined a Crossfit gym. This is really scary for me because I don't know anyone and I don't know how the classes work. For someone with social anxiety, it's a really big push out of my comfort zone. On the morning of my first Saturday morning class, I saw how many people were there and very nearly didn't get out of my car in the fear of it. But looking back, that would have been so silly! I got into the swing of things easily and I was paired with a girl I had met the day before. Plus I had a tonne of fun working alongside some bad-ass people. The more I go, the less anxious I will feel and I know I will be so glad that I pushed myself to do something I had been wanting to do for months.

"Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly" -John F. Kennedy

Be bold, be brave, and make as many mistakes as you can. I've learned that you simply can't evolve by staying where it's safe. That's exactly why I dyed my hair a completely new color, joined new fitness classes without knowing a single person, and agreed to supervise shifts at work despite my anxiety. Even saying "screw it!" and getting the tattoos I want, despite how much they might hurt, is still pushing myself to be braver. I refuse to look back on my life and say "what if?" and I know that leaving my comfort zone is the only way to stop that from happening.

There's magic and all new adventures waiting outside your comfort zone. Whatever you want to do but you're holding back on because of fear, just do it anyway and make your future self proud.

Went a little deeper than I usually do it this post, but I love sharing life experiences with you guys in the hopes of helping someone else. I know comfort zones are something we all struggle with, so let's all encourage each other to ditch them and have more fun!

What is something that you're dying to do that's out of your comfort zone?

  1. This was so incredibly encouraging to read & exactly what I needed to hear! This week is actually my last week of school ever and even though I'm so excited for a new chapter in my life & to start working towards the life I imagine, I'm also scared. Scared because I know that in order to get to where I want to be I'll have to step out of my comfort zone probably way more than I like and I'm definitely not the best when it comes to taking risks or trying something new. Thank you for writing this and making me feel very motivated & determined :) x

    1. Thanks so much Lucy! It was pretty scary asking him, and I keep wondering if it was the right thing to do. But I'm so much more at peace now, so I know I was right to do it. I'm just trying to get into the mindset of doing what scares me and get my confidence up. Thanks so much for saying that! :)
