Making Christmas Eve Boxes!

Friday, 22 December 2017

Not long until Christmas now guys!

I'm always looking for new traditions to make each year. Big or small, it's fun to start new memories. While I was browsing Pinterest the other month I came across the idea of "Christmas Eve Boxes" and knew that I had to make it happen.

I love surprises and/or surprising people I care about. This is a really lovely way to enjoy the festivities before the big day and get into the spirit. I will definitely be putting these together when I have children and put all kinds of goodies in the boxes for them to enjoy.

His

Mine

These boxes don't have to be expensive either. You have all of November/December to collect little things to put into them. You could pick up 1-2 items per week and before you know it you'll have a full box!

Ideas of box stuffers:

Fav Christmas chocolates

Marshmallows for toasting

Mugs

Festive socks

New Decorations

Christmas crackers

New pajamas

A small gift

A Christmas movie to watch

Hot chocolate mix

Movie snacks

Cider/wine

Christmas cookies

What do you think of the idea? Let me know what traditions you have on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas! Steph x.

Christmas Q&A With The Blossom Twins!

Tuesday, 19 December 2017

Hello Everyone!
The countdown to Christmas is on, who's excited?! I've got a few more festive-themed posts coming before the big day. I really wanted to get more bloggers involved in my Blogmas this year. I thought a Q&A would be a fun way to learn more about Christmas traditions from around the world. We have a summer Christmas here, so I love hearing about what other families do to celebrate.

Of course I had to ask the lovely Blossom Twins, Lucy and Kelly, a few questions about what this season means to them. Especially with their Italian heritage! I asked them a bunch of festive questions and loved reading their answers. I hope you do too and make sure you check out their amazing blog

What's the first thing you do on Christmas morning?

We usually wake up at the same time as our little sister, so we go downstairs, make coffee and either listen to the music channels or see if Harry Potter is on, while we wait for everyone else to wake up. Then we open a few presents before helping Mum cook our family lunch. This is our favorite time, helping her make our traditional salad while dancing around the kitchen listening to the Overtones.

This will be the first year, we will be in England, but in our own houses, so we will be starting new traditions. We will probably wake up with our husbands, have a nice breakfast and then walk through the park up to Mum and Dad's. Knowing us, we will be up extra early as we won't want to keep our sister Jen waiting! It's hard to break tradition.

Have you ever been away from home for Christmas?

We have yes. Both of us have experienced a Christmas in Virginia with our husband's families, each on different years. We love our in-laws and are very lucky, so we had lots of fun getting to know their traditions.

Finish the sentence: It doesn't feel like Christmas unless...

Our Nanna and Grandad's back room is full of boxes of Pandoro and Panettone (traditional Italian Christmas cakes.)

What would your dream advent calendar be filled with?

Ooh lets see, probably an Italian Baci calendar. That would be pretty cool. They are hazelnut kisses and are our favourite chocolate ever. So many memories are attached to them, so they are the first thing that come to mind.

I know you have an Italian background. Are there any traditions you bring to Christmas?

Yes!!! We always have plenty of the aforementioned Pandoro cakes and Nanna will decorate one the traditional Italian way with her custard, marsala wine and strawberries. It’s our favourite cake in the world. We also always have Christmas lunch, not dinner. Italians always have a bigger lunch and that’s what we’re used to, so we eat at around 11:30. In Italy they celebrate the Befana which is on 6th Jan, so our Nanna will always give us a card on that day and we take down our tree then too. It’s a big deal to her.

A white Christmas or a summer one?

Definitely a white one, even though we can’t remember the last recent one we had. We do have memories of being pulled on sleds to Nanna and Grandads one year when we were younger, when we used to have Christmas lunch at their house, so we did have a white Christmas day at least once in our memory. Usually it snows in late January, early February here. If we’re lucky.

What’s your most treasured ornament on your tree?

We have snowflake ornaments that our Nanna Knott gave us when we were younger, and they mean a lot to us. That’s our Nanna from our Dad’s side, who passed away 10 years ago. In fact, the Christmas tree we adore and have at our Mum and Dad’s house, we’ve had for the last 27 years but only found out the other day that it belonged to our Nanna and Grandad George, but Nanna gave it to us when we were 3, because she got a fiberoptic one. That makes it extra special to us now. The whole tree is overcrowded with ornaments that are over 20 years old. Dad keeps saying we need to replace it but we’re not ready for that yet, even though Jen – our little sister – has a great idea for what to do with the ornaments when we do. Think Christmas shadow boxes.

If you could only eat one brand of chocolate in December, which one would you choose?

Perugina Baci, for the reason stated earlier and because they are delicious! We always have to have a box on our dessert table.

Is there a present you received as a child on Christmas that you remember most?

We’re going to have to say the presents we received in Florida because we remember them so clearly. It was the first, and only Christmas, as kids that Mum and Dad actually took us away on Christmas day. We did it once and just like ourselves now, our Mum didn’t like being away from her Mum and Dad, so we never did it again. But, we think the reason for going was to go to Disneyworld and that was our present, which was very awesome and amazing of our Mum and Dad. However, we remember on Christmas morning we woke up to Power Ranger annuals. Now, these annuals are what we remember mostly and we still own them to this day. We loved Power Rangers and were so excited. A few years later, we got to visit Lapland and we got Tina Teddy in a Tin (Lucy) and Barbie’s sister Shelly with accessories (Kelly) from Santa, that we were also very pleased with. We have the hilarious video evidence to prove it! :p Lucy still has her Tina Teddy and still adores it.

And finally, what’s your Christmas anthem you always play?

This is one of the best questions because it means we get to talk about The Overtones and how amazing they are and how so so so glad we are that they bought out a Christmas album. Before it, Mariah Carey was our jam and don’t get us wrong, we still love that song, it wouldn’t be Christmas without it. But when we put in Good Ol’ Fashioned Christmas by The Overtones, we dance, we sing, our Mum joins in and it’s just pure happiness. Over the last few years we’ve always been disappointed by new Christmas songs, the oldies are the best but when we heard the two new songs The Overtones came up with for their Christmas album, we couldn’t have been more impressed. Instant classics, that are even better when you see them preformed live!!!

A big thank you to Lucy and Kelly for taking the time to answer my questions. It was a lot of fun reading your answers and having you feature on my blog. It's always a pleasure!

Make sure you check out their blog. They just posted an Italian cheesecake recipe that looks amazing!

Feel free to answer any of the questions in the comments below.

Being Okay With Having Less This Christmas

Sunday, 10 December 2017

Happy Blogmas Day 10!

This is definitely going to be more of a chatty post, which I probably don't do enough of. This is going to be an honest and personal post and I'm hoping there will be some of you who can relate and maybe feel better about it.
So grab a cup of tea or coffee, whatever your preference/need, and let's dive in!

I think you guys can get the gist that I LOVE Christmas. December is by far my favorite time of year and not just for the festivities. I also have my birthday (4th) Steve's birthday (12th) Dad's birthday (17th) my brother's birthday (18th) and finally our anniversary on the 18th also. It's a busy month with lots of presents to buy, food to make, and a whole lot of fun to go with it.

Christmas makes me wanna go out and buy fairy lights, all the special chocolates, and spoil my loved ones with the things that they deserve. My family has never made Christmas about the material items, but sometimes you just wanna go all out you know? I was single for so long that I only had to worry about myself and my fam.

But 2017 has been different so far. And that's only because I have fully dived into the adult world by moving in with Steve, which has honestly been the best thing ever. We have our independence from flatmates and parents and it's just bliss. We spent months in cramped rooms and we cherish our house so much. And of course bills come with it, but for me it's worth every penny.

I think everyone struggles with finances at some point in their lives. I've heard stories of how my own parents made things work while me and my brother were little and they did an amazing job at never letting us feel like we missed out on anything. I have friends and workmates who talk about how expensive things are and it reassures me that I'm not failing. I know my time will come when I don't have to worry about money. But in the meantime, I'm learning how to be okay with having less.

We bought our first Christmas tree together this year, which made me that happiest girl ever. We bought a $10 pack of decorations and I skimmed the charity shops for any cute ones. I think our tree looks absolutely beautiful, especially twinkling away at night time.
Since it fell around my birthday, this was Steve's present to me. It was a little sad not opening any presents in the morning when I woke up, but it's okay.

This time of year I have been absolutely desperate for new running shoes. My calf and Achilles have been killing me since my old shoes are just too worn down now. I had to ask my parents for new ones for Christmas because I can't fork out for a good pair of new ones. They're amazing and are more than happy to.
So that's okay as well.

My point is, I may have had a few nights where I cried because I couldn't buy a new dress for my birthday, or I have had to ask for the things I need, rather than the things I want. But it's okay.

I have a roof over my head that I share with the man that I love. We have decent jobs that we like and enables us to pay rent every week.

So if you ever feel like a failure because you have $5 left on the week you get paid again, don't. Because we all have to learn how to make things work. It makes me feel proud when I can still provide good meals and keep the house moving along nicely. I'm more grateful for the things that I have now and when I actually can go out and buy something for myself, even if it does come from a charity shop.

Remember to take a moment to be grateful for all the little things this holiday season.
Life is good. It will never be perfect, but where's the fun in that? ; )

What are you grateful for?

A Gift Guide For The Man In Your Life

Monday, 4 December 2017

I'm not normally one to dive into gift guides, but if there's one place under the tree that I struggle to buy for, it's the fella in my life. I mean, most girls are happy with: jewelry, books, candles, fluffy sweaters, or a Disney mug. But boys? They can be tough to buy for this time of year.

I tried to find items that would be a safe bet and that most guys would enjoy opening on Christmas morning(I hope.) They're also pretty budget-friendly, so I'm not gonna expect anyone to go out and buy the new iPhone or a game console. But if you have the resources, go for it! You gotta roll with what your man enjoys doing in his spare time or something fun for the both of you.

If in doubt, get them something silly to make them laugh. Here's a few ideas to get the ball rolling for you:

Video Games: I'm yet to meet a guy that doesn't enjoy setting down for a solid six hours to play a game, so these are always a good choice. And a bonus if you enjoy it too!

Punderdome Card Game: Because we all get a kick out of bad jokes. Kinda seems like a less-dirty version of Cards Against Humanity, so you can play it with the family without it getting awkward.

A new pair of headphones: I don't know anyone who doesn't currently need a new pair, right? Do some research on this one and make sure you get the right one.

A whisky bottle: This awesome John Lewis one looks so cool, so both of you will be happy displaying it in the house!

A new shaving kit: Because guys like feeling fresh and looking good too. And if you get him a new razor you could always borrow it to make sure it works properly...

Pick out a cologne you really love. Any time he puts it on you'll love it, and date night will be even spicier.

How cool is this? I do like it when my man keeps me safe and this would be a great read!

Silly socks: You can never have enough socks! Especially epic ones like these. I personally love it when guys wear silly socks under their suits at fancy events. Makes things more fun.

Desktop Ping Pong: How fun would it be to bring this out on a Friday night and get a little digital detox? Maybe the winner gets a foot rub from the other.

New coffee gadgets: If he loves a good brew, then there's plenty of cool stuff to update his daily coffee needs. I thought this french press was really classic and it's small so he could take it to work!

100 Places You Must Visit Before You Die Poster: For the guy that has the travel bug, or even a fun way to document your adventures together. You get to peal off the places you've been to show the illustration behind it. So cool!

For the kid in him, Lego: How can you all go wrong? I think we are all still hoping to get toys for Christmas, so why not treat him to something awesome? And on the bright side, it might keep him entertained for a few hours!

I hope this was a helpful guide for guys! Leave me some comments below of any ideas you've had and we can help each other :)

My December Guilty Pleasures: Foodie Edition

Saturday, 2 December 2017

Can we all just agree now that December is the best time of year for food?
And I know there's lots of treats and temptations around, but hey! It's only once a year that you can spoil yourself all month long. Might as well enjoy everything Christmas has to offer!

I'm always curious to see what treats are popular overseas in the festive season. The UK seems to get some amazing ones by the way! Us sitting down here at the bottom of the world are very jealous. Since I love talking about food so much, I thought why not dedicate a blog to all my guilty pleasures I just have to have at Christmas. I am someone who normally tries to eat carefully, but I like to let my hair down a little in December and not feel guilty for eating something special (and a little bad for you.)

Mince Pies
Fun fact: I couldn't stand these when I was younger, but ever since my Mum started making her own I love them! The crispy pastry, tarty filling, and maybe some whipped cream on top just to make it perfect. I started buying these in the middle of November and probably go through a pack a week now. In my defense Steve eats them too so I share with him.

Malteaser Reindeer Chocolate
Seriously though, why don't they make this by the block now? The supermarkets always sell these as you walk up to pay and they're always on sale for less than a dollar each. I can't leave without one!

Advent Calendars
I'm not even talking about the fancy kind either. I'm just looking at the the $3 ones that we all used to have as kids. There's something about the chocolate that always tastes so good, and just like the way it did when I was young. Eating chocolate before breakfast is one of the best things about December by far! It's an exciting part of the daily build up to Christmas.

Terry's Chocolate Orange
These have been on Kiwi shelves for years but I never really paid it much attention. Then I watched a YouTube video where Zoella and Louise were exchanging gifts and they raved about this simple treat. Being the easily-influenced girl I was at 23, I went out and searched for one immediately. Little did I know that it would start an unhealthy obsession, but I regret nothing at all! Oh wow are these amazing.

Cheese Boards
Stepping away from the chocolate section for a minute, just to talk about the post-Christmas dinner binge fest I have with the cheese board. I'm usually the only one who ends up eating from it, but that just means more for me! Any kind of cheese: Swiss, smoked, brie, feta, Camembert. But just not any of that smelly blue stuff.

Cadbury Popping Elves
These have been available for a few years now and we always insist on having them all through December. It's Cadbury chocolate made better with popping candy! How cool is that? They're just fun to eat and you could maybe say that they're a little magical.

Pavlova
Ahh, the Kiwi favorite and the dessert it wouldn't be Christmas without. If you've never had it before just imagine eating a meringue that has a super-fluffy and sweet centre. Topped with fresh (and only fresh) whipped cream and your favorite summer fruit. Ask a New Zealander to make it for you and you won't be sorry.

What are your guilty pleasures you eat all month long?
(Don't be shy, we all do it!)

ps. Happy Blogmas Day 2!

My December Bucket-List 2017

Thursday, 23 November 2017

It's finally my favorite time of the year!
December for me has always been filled with birthday celebrations (there's four of us this year) as well as the excitement of Christmas getting closer. And I can't forget about all of the vlogmas videos we will all try to keep up and (and fail like always because there's so many!) and get inspired by.

I haven't always been the type of person to go nuts for Christmas, but since I've started my blog and watched Zoella turn her house into winter wonderland, I'm ready for everything December has to offer: advent calendars (aka chocolate for breakfast) making ginger bread cookies, and a Christmas carol playlist on Spotify.

Since Steve and I are in our first home for the holiday season and it feels like a new chapter in my life, so I wanted to make this December extra special. I wrote out this list back in October when I made the decision to do Blogmas, and it made me so excited for this month to come around. I think that if you have a list of goals ready to go, it will make you go out and do all the fun stuff you've always wanted to do.

Buy our first Christmas tree together

Try new recipes all month long

Make my own hot cinnamon rolls for breakfast

Send out Christmas cards

Celebrate our one year anniversary

Make a crockpot hot chocolate

Buy a new party dress

Have a picnic in the summer sun

Take a picture to commemorate our first Christmas in the house

Put fairy-lights everywhere

Make a Christmas playlist

Wear something that sparkles

Have a pajama day

Buy our Christmas stockings

Start new traditions with Steve

Make fun plans for New Years

What fun things are you planning this December?

A Christmas Day Photo Diary

Monday, 26 December 2016

I can't believe another Christmas has come and gone, but what a day it was! I spent the morning prepping food in the kitchen beside my Mum. Once everyone else was out of bed, we all exchanged gifts. The plan was to then have our big brunch together, but my Grandad arrived early so we all got changed as quickly as we could and got ready for lunch instead.

I had to leave at 3.30pm for a shift at work (no holidays for hospitals) but on my way in I saw some families all enjoying time together in the park. It wouldn't be a Kiwi Christmas without playing with a plastic cricket set on the green! Ah, memories.

After rushing all day I was ready to just relax when I got home and enjoy some dessert. I forgot to take photos, but my profiterole trifle turned out amazing! I filled them with butterscotch custard, then layered some cream and whisky syrup. Yum! I also got completely spoiled with Star Wars goodies and fitness gear by someone very special. Feeling like a very lucky girl! It was lovely to finish the night by watching Captain America and devouring so more chocolate.

I hope everyone had a great day with loved ones and ate lots of delicious food! And don't feel bad for binging on a few mince pies, we've all been there.

What did your Christmas look like?

A Christmas Afternoon In Pictures

Monday, 12 December 2016

Starting to plan our Christmas menu! I always help my Mum with the cooking, so we need some ideas for the big day.

I'm baking my first batch of gingerbread cookies for the festive season! These are a healthy version made with buckwheat and gluten-free flour, plus coconut sugar. It even has freshly grated ginger in it for extra spice. It has to firm up in the fridge for an hour, so I'm going to work on something else in the mean time.

The next baking project is to make profiteroles! I want to make a trifle using them for Christmas day, so I had better get practicing. I've never tried to make Chou pastry before, so let's see how it goes.

Not entirely successful, but not a failure either! Will try again next week.

Wouldn't be a Sunday afternoon with doing a little meal prep!

The cookies came out great, a little dry but I love the taste of them. My icing skills are getting better too.

I can finally put up our Christmas tree!

It's finally feeling festive around here! Our tree is filled with ornaments that we have had for years, or special ones we bought while traveling.

What would a Christmas afternoon look like for you?
